The Wizard Nebula (NGC 7380) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus, surrounding a young open star cluster. Its glowing hydrogen clouds and dark dust structures give it the outline that inspired its name.
It lies about 7,000 light-years away in the Cepheus region of the Milky Way. At its centre sits an open cluster only a few million years old, whose hot stars light up the hydrogen around them and sculpt the dark columns of dust. The nebula was discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1787.
