The Western Veil (NGC 6960), also known as the Witch's Broom, is part of the Cygnus Loop, the remains of a star that exploded some 10,000 to 20,000 years ago. About 2,400 light-years away, its thin ribbons of glowing gas still expand through space.

The bright star near the nebula, 52 Cygni, is a foreground star that has nothing to do with the remnant, and it is visible to the naked eye. William Herschel discovered NGC 6960 in 1784.
