The Splinter Galaxy (NGC 5907) is a spiral galaxy about 50 million light-years away in Draco. We see it edge-on, so its disk appears as a slender line crossed by dust, and this image also records a supernova.
Its nickname comes from its thin, almost needle-like profile. Deep exposures also reveal a faint loop of stars encircling it, the remains of a smaller galaxy torn apart by its gravity. The galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in 1788.
