The Shark Nebula (LDN 1235) is a dark nebula, a cold cloud of dust and gas so dense that it blocks the light of the stars behind it. About 650 light-years away, it takes its name from a silhouette that resembles a shark.

Dark nebulae like this one are listed in Beverly Lynds's 1962 catalogue, which gives LDN 1235 its name. Located in the Cepheus Flare, the dust is dense enough to hide the stars behind it, and it shows up against the faint glow of the surrounding interstellar dust.
