The Sadr Region (IC 1318) is a vast complex of hydrogen clouds and dark dust around the bright star Sadr, which marks the centre of the Northern Cross in the constellation Cygnus. This wide-field 2:1 panorama also includes the Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888), a glowing shell of gas shaped by a massive, evolved star.
Cygnus lies along the Milky Way, so the region is rich in glowing hydrogen, drifting dust and countless stars. The Crescent Nebula is the work of a Wolf-Rayet star whose powerful wind sweeps up the material it shed earlier in its life. Seen together, the two show how stars shape the clouds around them.
