The Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237) is a vast star-forming region about 5,000 light-years away in Monoceros. The young cluster NGC 2244 at its centre has cleared a hollow in the gas, and its winds and radiation make the surrounding petals glow.
The nebula spans about 130 light-years, and the stars of NGC 2244 are only a few million years old. Powerful stellar winds have cleared the central hollow and pushed the gas outward into a ring of glowing hydrogen and dark dust. The cluster can be spotted with binoculars, while the nebula itself needs long exposures.
