The Pleiades (M45) is a young open star cluster about 440 light-years away in Taurus. Its hot blue stars are wrapped in delicate veils of interstellar dust, which reflect their light in a soft blue glow.

Also known as the Seven Sisters, the cluster holds over a thousand stars and is only about 100 million years old. Its brightest stars bear the names of the sisters of Greek myth and their parents, Atlas and Pleione. The blue nebulosity is dust that the cluster is passing through, not the cloud it was born from.
