The Pacman Nebula (NGC 281) is an emission nebula in the constellation Cassiopeia, lit by a young open star cluster at its centre. Dark dust lanes cut into the glowing hydrogen and give the nebula its Pac-Man-like shape.
It lies roughly 9,000 light-years away. The cluster at its heart, IC 1590, is only a few million years old, and its hot stars carve the surrounding gas with radiation and powerful winds. Dark globules of dust stand out against the glow, and the nebula was discovered by E. E. Barnard in 1883.
