The Orion Nebula (M42) is a vast region of star formation about 1,350 light-years away, visible to the naked eye in the sword of Orion. At its heart lies the Trapezium, a young cluster whose radiation lights the surrounding gas in brilliant colour.
It is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth, and many of the young stars here are still surrounded by discs of gas and dust, the raw material of planets. The nebula stretches across more than 20 light-years, and its neighbour M43 belongs to the same cloud complex.
