The North America Nebula (NGC 7000) lies about 2,600 light-years away in Cygnus and takes its name from an outline that recalls the shape of the continent. It is an enormous cloud of glowing hydrogen where new stars are still being born.

A dark band of dust on its edge forms the "Gulf of Mexico", and the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) sits close by in the same cloud complex. NGC 7000 covers about four full Moons of sky, so it is best captured with a wide field. William Herschel discovered it in 1786.
