The Jellyfish Nebula (IC 443) is a supernova remnant in Gemini, about 5,000 light-years away. It is the expanding debris of a massive star that exploded thousands of years ago, and its delicate filaments of glowing gas are still moving through space.
IC 443 lies near the star Eta Geminorum, and the explosion that created it is estimated to have happened between a few thousand and some tens of thousands of years ago. At its centre, a neutron star, the compact core left behind by the supernova, has been detected in X-rays.
