The Heart Nebula (IC 1805) is an emission nebula about 7,500 light-years away in Cassiopeia. At its centre, the young star cluster Melotte 15 carves out the cavities and pillars of gas that give the nebula its shape.
The cluster is only a few million years old, and its hot, massive stars ionise the hydrogen around them, making it glow red. Their winds and radiation erode the gas into the cavities and pillars seen in the nebula. The Heart is a close neighbour of the Soul Nebula, and the pair is often photographed together.
