IC 1396 is a large star-forming region about 2,400 light-years away in Cepheus, home to the dark, winding globule known as the Elephant's Trunk. Its dusty clouds are eroded by the radiation of a hot central star, and inside them new stars are slowly taking shape.

The Trunk is a dense globule some 20 light-years long, sculpted by the radiation of the bright young star nearby. The whole nebula covers an area of sky many times wider than the full Moon, so it is best captured with a wide field.
