The Eastern Veil Nebula (NGC 6992) is the brightest arc of the Veil Nebula, a supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. Its thin, sweeping filaments of glowing hydrogen and oxygen mark the expanding shock wave of a star that exploded thousands of years ago.

The Veil is part of the Cygnus Loop, about 2,400 light-years away, and NGC 6992 together with its fainter neighbour NGC 6995 forms the Eastern Veil. The gas glows because the blast wave heats it as it ploughs through the surrounding interstellar medium. William Herschel first noticed the Veil in 1784.
