The Cygnus Loop is a supernova remnant about 2,400 light-years away. It is the expanding shell of a massive star that exploded 10,000 to 20,000 years ago, and its fine, glowing filaments now span a region several times wider than the full Moon.
The Loop is best known through its brightest sections: the Eastern Veil (NGC 6992 and NGC 6995), the Western Veil (NGC 6960, the Witch's Broom) and Pickering's Triangle. The shell is still expanding, and where the blast wave collides with the surrounding gas it makes it glow in hydrogen and oxygen.
