The Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888) is about 5,000 light-years away in Cygnus. It was shaped by the powerful wind of a massive Wolf-Rayet star, which sweeps up the material it shed earlier in its life and makes it glow.

The star at its centre, known as WR 136, is shedding its outer layers at enormous speed and is expected to end its life as a supernova. William Herschel discovered the nebula in 1792.
