The Butterfly Nebula (IC 1318) is a vast cloud of hydrogen in Cygnus that surrounds the bright star Sadr. Its glowing lobes and dark dust lanes give the region the shape from which it takes its name.
As seen from Earth, the nebula surrounds Sadr, the central star of the Northern Cross, although the star lies much closer to us than the gas. The cloud is part of a large star-forming complex in the Milky Way, thousands of light-years away, where hydrogen glows red under the radiation of young, hot stars.
