Sharpless 2-140 (Sh2-140) is a faint emission nebula in the constellation Cepheus, listed in the Sharpless catalogue of HII regions. Its glowing hydrogen and dark dust clouds are set against a dense star field.

HII regions are clouds of hydrogen ionised by the ultraviolet light of hot young stars, which makes them glow in the deep red of hydrogen-alpha. The Sharpless catalogue, compiled by Stewart Sharpless and published in 1959, lists more than 300 of them. Sh2-140 is far fainter than the famous nebulae of the northern sky and rewards long exposures.
